Photo walk with the Canon Rebel 2000
Today we picked out two great spots to try out the Canon Rebel 2000. The first is one of the most scenic spots in Austin - Mount Bonnell. This is one of the highest points in Austin and it provides a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding Texas Hill Country. We then drove down the hill to the fantastic Laguna Gloria Sculpture Garden. Since we went out midday into full sun, we chose Kodak Gold 200 as our film.
Getting to the top of Mount Bonnell requires a pretty serious hike up some steep steps, but the view is well worth the effort. The 28-80mm lens on the Canon Rebel 2000 was nice to have in this situation. We were able to go really wide to capture scenic Lake Austin and then zoom in close on the skyline to get some shots of downtown.
We snapped a few photos of the view and then made our way over to Laguna Gloria. This is a wonderful place to enjoy an afternoon surrounded by art and a beautiful view. We tested out the zoom lens on some of the larger sculptures and were impressed by how sharp the photos turned out. The auto focus did a great job of making sure that the small details were in crisp focus.
The Canon Rebel 2000 features a number of different shooting modes, so we decided to try out several of them during our photo walk. The Full Auto mode was so nice to have when we came upon a peacock resting under a tree and wanted to quickly capture a shot before it moved!
This is a camera that is easy to use for a beginner, but offers a lot of manual options for those who know what they are doing. We could see this being a great choice for someone taking a college photography course!
We also had fun experimenting with the flash! The built in flash on the Canon Rebel 2000 is a great tool regardless of whether you are in a dark situation or not. Using the flash in a bright situation can create a cool freeze frame effect akin to something you might see in a fashion magazine. We love the added dimensions to these flower shots.
Kodak Gold 200 was definitely the right choice of film for this bright of a day. It didn't struggle with the full sunlight locations like a faster film might. The colors were balanced with a slightly warm tint and the contrast between light and dark areas in the images looked great. We had so much fun with the Canon Rebel 2000 that we definitely will be trying it out again with different Canon lenses!
